We figured after a THREE MONTH trip to India, what is more American than a casino in the heart of the midwest? Pretty much nothing!
To get from Jaipur, India to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, it took a five-hour car ride, a fifteen-hour flight, a shuttle, another shuttle, a bus from O’Hare to Milwaukee and finally a shuttle from the bus station to the casino. We crossed time zones baby! Weather zones. I think we crossed every zone there is.
And Milwaukee was so awesome to come home to. I’m a lifelong Chicagoan and I’m embarrassed to admit my first trip to Milwaukee wasn’t until a few years ago, but I fell in love with the city. The buildings! THE CALATRAVA. It makes me cry, I think it is most beautiful.
When we got to the Potawatomi after a two-hour bus ride from O’Hare (piece of cake by the way) we were a bit dazed. But the lobby was so pretty and bright, we sparked right back up. We were both excited to see all the holiday decorations everywhere, there’s not much Christmas in India!
And our room was great! We felt like total rockstars. Modern but cozy and warm and the TV – the TV was kind of awesome.
The view from our room was crystal clear and Milwaukee was showing off for sure.
We took really hot showers, made tea in our room (!) for the jet-lag and headed to the casino.
Can I call it cozy? Is that possible that a casino can be cozy? It was cozy! The casino started as a bingo hall and now it has one of the largest bingo halls in the states, it can hold 1,350 players! I was mesmerized.
John was most impressed with the design of the place. He commented a lot on how it had a real consistent vibe and that someone cared about this casino, how it looked and the feeling it gave to its players. There was so much about the history of the Potawatomi and it blended seamlessly into the casino, it was really warm.
Now, we took much transportation to get to the Potawatomi Hotel & Casino and that gave us a lot of time to talk about what we were getting at the buffet. Admittedly when we got there, we kept going back for salads because coming from India? We wanted salads. But the truth was we ate about everything on that buffet and hit the desserts especially hard because, well, LOOK AT THEM.
We food crashed after the buffet but woke up early the next morning to enjoy a fine breakfast at the Canal Street Cafe. Our lovely waitress kept laughing about how impressed we were with the coffee because coffee in India is really Nescafe.
We checked out, took a really short cab ride to the bus station, took a bus to Fremont (our final stop!) and arrived rested, full and happy to be back in America.
They’re adding another hotel to the Potawatomi and I can see why. It’s a perfect place for a staycation, a great destination in Milwaukee and it’s a casino that has a real personality to it. We loved it and are coming back for BINGO this summer.
Thank you, Potawatomi Hotel & Casino for helping us come back seamlessly to the States!
